When I feel depressed, the first thing I have to do is a bag of potato chips. Maybe you do the same. Or you can find a box of biscuits. Or drive across the lane.

Whatever comfortable food you choose, you will fall into a vicious circle, which I call junk food blues. Depression makes you want junk food. But health studies show that junk food makes you more depressed. So you just keep digging deep into yourself.

Now, there is a food that drives junk food faster than any other food - fast food. Fortunately, there is another food that can turn junk food into blue food... and even keep it in good condition.

Fast food, fish and depression

A recent health study by health researchers at James Cook University in Australia found that two foods have the greatest impact on the risk of depression: fast food and fish.

The health study examined the link between depression and diet in people living on Torres Strait Island (where fast food is available) and on another island (where they do not).

Health researchers talk to 100 people on each island. About 19 of these people suffer from moderate to severe depression. Almost everyone comes from fast food on the island. Sixteen of the depressive patients came from Torres Strait Island, while only three came from another island.

Now, people from islands with fewer depressions eat fast food (because they don't have it around) and more fish. Health researchers believe this may be the key to preventing or even treating depression. Why?

Well, it all depends on the fatty acids in each food. Health researchers took blood samples from researchers. Those who eat more fish and less fast food have more omega-3 fatty acids and less omega-6 fatty acids in their blood. On the other hand, people who eat fast food have more omega-6.

Ideally, your Omega 3 and Omega 6 should be balanced. Traditional culture is doing well. They usually eat a ratio of 1:1_-6 to_-3. However, the industrialized Western culture is getting out of trouble. The ratio of these cultures is more like 20:1, because processed foods are rich in omega-6.

Keep your fat balance and make your brain happier

So you might want to carefully study the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in your diet. Do you have more omega-6?

Now I can tell you that if you eat processed foods every day, you may get too much. Processed foods contain a lot of vegetable oils rich in omega-6, such as safflower oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil and so on.

Omega 3 is found in fish, eggs, walnuts, Chia seeds and flaxseed. If you eat a lot of this, your fatty acid ratio (and mood) is more likely to be balanced.

But if it's too daunting to analyze your entire diet, keep it simple and make two changes...

Eat less fast food and more fish. According to the health study, these simple changes alone are enough to make junk food bluer.
